The right-to-left mark (RLM) is a non-printing character used in the computerized typesetting of bi-directional text containing mixed left-to-right scripts (such as English and Russian) and right-to-left scripts (such as Arabic, Persian and Hebrew). Suppose the writer wishes to inject a run of Arabic or Hebrew (i.e. right-to-left) text into an English paragraph, with an exclamation point at the end of the run on the left hand side. "I enjoyed staying -- really! -- at his house." With the "really!" in Hebrew, the sentence renders as follows:
I enjoyed staying -- באמת<span style="color:red">!</span> -- at his house.
(Note that in a computer's memory, the order of the Hebrew characters is ‭ב,א,מ,ת‬.)

With an RLM added after the exclamation mark, it renders as follows:
I enjoyed staying -- באמת<span style="color:red">!</span>&rlm; -- at his house.
(Standards-compliant browsers will render the exclamation mark on the right in the first example, and on the left in the second.)

This happens because the browser recognizes that the paragraph is in a LTR script ([[Latin script|Latin]]), and applies punctuation, which is neutral as to its direction, in coordination with the surrounding (left-to-right) text. The RLM causes the punctuation to be surrounded by only RTL text—the Hebrew and the RLM—and hence be positioned as if it were in right-to-left text, i.e., to the left of the preceding text.

In rare circumstances, when you cannot merge segments (poorly segmented IDML files or SDLXLIFF files), you may want to turn this off. For example, if you have the following four segments:

That you translate into French as:
1. Directeur de
2. Marketing
3. Directeur de
4. Finance

With auto-propagation turned on, once you “translate” segment 4, it will auto-propagate to segment 2, replacing ''Marketing'' with ''Finance''. To disable '''Auto-Propagation''', repeat steps 1-3 and uncheck "Enable Auto-Propagation for repetitions".

Q. Why pre-translate a file?

You might want to pre-translate a file in the following cases:
# You are sending the translation job to someone as a package or bilingual file and do not want to send them the translation memory (TM) for security or confidentiality purposes.
# You are sending the translation job to someone as a package and you do not want them to modify 100% match segments, edit source segments, or merge segments.
# You are sending the translation job to someone as a package, they do not have a Google or Microsoft MT API key, and you want them to post-edit a machine translation (MT).
# You want to get a fast, machine translated version of your file in the same format and avoid time-consuming copy and paste as well as desktop publishing when using an online MT engine.

Q. How do I pre-translate a file?
The easiest way to pre-translate a file is during the project creation. There are two options at the bottom right of the Project Creation wizard that allow you to pre-translate the file using your TM and/or your MT engine. Tick the pre-translation box and eventually the MT box if so desired.

Once you have created the project, in the '''''Current Project''''' view under the '''''Project Files''''' tab, you can lock segments from editing using the '''''Analyze''''' icon. After clicking the icon, in the '''''Analysis''''' window, you have '''''Analysis Options''''' to pre-translate the file (if for example you didn’t do so when creating the project) as well as lock 100% matches and prevent source editing or the merging of segments.

Chaining Files together in Wordfast Pro

Chaining files together is useful when you have several files in a project. You can open all of them as a single file, instead of opening each one individually, translating, saving, closing, etc.
When files are chained together, auto-propagation will also propagate repetitions across all the files so if you decide to change a repetition later in your translate, it will change all of them in every file.

The Auto-Suggest feature allows users to automatically insert numbers, proper nouns (i.e. words in upper-case), TM sub-segment matches and terminology equivalents from the source to the target cell. This saves time and prevents the user from misspelling proper nouns.
